The Michigan State Spartans enter the 2025 season with a clear identity on offense: run the football with authority and keep the quarterback clean. That mission starts and ends with an offensive line unit that returns several heavy hitters and adds a pair of elite transfers who should step straight into the rotation.

Leading the charge is the interior duo of center Tanner Miller and guard Kristian Phillips. Both are returning starters with a mean streak, and both have spent the offseason adding functional strength to handle the Big Ten's punishing defensive tackles. Phillips, in particular, has drawn praise from the coaching staff for his improved footwork in pass protection, a critical area after the Spartans allowed too much pressure up the middle last fall.

The biggest storyline, however, is the arrival of two veteran transfers from Power Five programs. They bring starting experience and a physical edge that was sometimes missing in the second half of games a year ago. One is expected to lock down the left tackle spot, giving the new quarterback a blindside protector who has faced elite edge rushers. The other projects as a versatile swing player who can play either guard or tackle, which gives the staff flexibility if injuries hit.

The coaching staff has made no secret of their intent to lean on the ground game. New offensive coordinator has installed a gap-heavy scheme that rewards pullers and double teams. That fits the personnel perfectly. The tackles are athletic enough to reach the second level, while the guards are at their best when moving downhill. Expect the Spartans to run the ball early and often, especially in the first quarter, to set the tone and control the clock.

Depth remains a concern, as only two backups have meaningful game reps. But the starting five, when healthy, might be the most physical group in the East division. If they stay intact, Michigan State's offense will be a problem for every defense on the schedule. The foundation is set. Now it is about execution.
