Duke head coach Manny Diaz is not hiding his frustration with the current state of college football, particularly when it comes to the decisions the NCAA continues to face regarding player movement and roster management. As the transfer portal window approaches, Diaz made it clear that he believes the system is creating unnecessary chaos for programs across the country.
Diaz pointed to the timing of the portal and the lack of clear, consistent rules as major issues that coaches are forced to navigate every offseason. He argued that the current structure puts programs in difficult positions, especially when players can enter the portal while bowl preparation and postseason activities are still underway. According to Diaz, the NCAA has difficult decisions to make, and he feels those decisions have not been handled well up to this point.
The Duke coach also emphasized that while he supports players having opportunities to move, the lack of stability makes it hard for coaches to build and maintain rosters. He noted that the constant uncertainty forces staffs to recruit their own players year round while also preparing for games.
Diaz's comments reflect a growing sentiment among coaches who feel the NCAA needs to step in and create a more balanced system. With the portal set to open soon, Diaz said his program is bracing for another unpredictable stretch. He made it clear that he intends to keep pushing for changes that give teams a fairer chance to manage their futures.
