The New York Giants have plenty of holes on their roster, but wide receiver remains one of the more curious ones. Malik Nabers is the clear number one, and the team added some depth, but there is still no proven veteran presence opposite him. Keenan Allen, the six-time Pro Bowler, remains unsigned. That is a fact. The Giants could still sign him, and it seems like a match that should have happened weeks ago.
So why the delay? The obvious answer is money. Allen is 32 years old and coming off a season where he caught 70 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns with the Chicago Bears. Those are not elite numbers, but they are solid for a possession receiver. He is not the deep threat he once was, but he still runs crisp routes and has reliable hands. For a young quarterback like Daniel Jones, or whoever ends up starting, having a safety blanket like Allen would be huge.
The Giants have roughly $12 million in cap space, so a deal is possible. But they may be waiting to see if Allen's price drops as training camp approaches. That is a risky game. Other teams with playoff aspirations could swoop in. The Giants need to decide if they want to compete now or keep building for the future. Signing Allen would signal they want to win this year. Not signing him might mean they are comfortable with what they have, which is not saying much. The clock is ticking, and the longer this drags out, the less likely it happens.
