Former University of Washington defensive lineman Voi Tunuufi has passed away at the age of 23. The university confirmed the death on Sunday, though a cause of death has not been released.
Tunuufi played for the Huskies from 2019 to 2023, appearing in 38 games. He was part of the team that reached the College Football Playoff National Championship game last season. The defensive tackle recorded 38 total tackles, including 4.5 sacks and a forced fumble during his college career.
Head coach Jedd Fisch expressed deep sadness over the loss, calling Tunuufi a beloved teammate and a person who brought energy to the program every day. Former teammates and coaches also shared tributes on social media, remembering his hard work and positive attitude.
Tunuufi was from East Palo Alto, California, and attended Junipero Serra High School before joining the Huskies. He graduated with a degree in American Ethnic Studies earlier this year.
The university said it is providing counseling and support services to current and former players affected by the news. The Huskies football program plans to honor Tunuufi during their next home game.
