With NCAA Tournament expansion imminent, some of the game's biggest coaches still aren't sold on the idea

As the NCAA Tournament inches closer to expansion, some of college basketball's most influential coaches are pushing back against the idea. While the 68-team field has been a staple of March Madness for over a decade, momentum is building to increase the bracket to 72 or even 76 teams. But not everyone is buying in.

Dan Hurley, who led UConn to back-to-back national titles, voiced concerns about diluting the product. "The tournament is perfect as is," he said recently. "Every game matters. Every bid is earned. You start adding more teams, you risk losing that edge."

John Calipari, now at Arkansas after a long run at Kentucky, echoed that sentiment. He argued that expansion could hurt the regular season and conference tournaments. "We already have a hard time getting fans to care about January games," Calipari said. "More teams in the field just means more mediocrity."

Gonzaga's Mark Few and Michigan State's Tom Izzo also expressed hesitation. Few pointed to the potential for more blowouts in the first round, while Izzo warned that the selection committee already struggles to differentiate between bubble teams. "Adding more teams doesn't fix the problem," Izzo said. "It just changes who gets left out."

The NCAA has cited financial incentives and the desire to include more mid-major programs as reasons for expansion. But for now, the sport's biggest names remain unconvinced, arguing that the current format has produced some of the most memorable moments in sports history. Whether their voices will slow the momentum remains to be seen.
