'New chapter': Lu Dort gives first reaction to joining Hawks

Lu Dort has spoken for the first time since the blockbuster deal that sent him from Oklahoma City to Atlanta, and the veteran wing made it clear he is ready to embrace the change. The Hawks acquired Dort in a multi-team trade late Tuesday night, a move that reshapes their perimeter defense and adds a gritty, playoff-tested presence to a young core.

In a brief media availability on Wednesday, Dort addressed the trade directly, calling it "a new chapter" in his career. He acknowledged the difficulty of leaving the only franchise he had known since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but he quickly pivoted to excitement about what lies ahead in Atlanta.

"Obviously, Oklahoma City is home for me in a lot of ways. I grew up there as a player and as a man," Dort said. "But this is the business. I am grateful for everything the Thunder gave me, but I am ready to compete. The Hawks have something real building here, and I want to be a part of that."

The 25-year-old is known for his tenacious on-ball defense and his ability to guard multiple positions, a skill set that head coach Quin Snyder has been looking to add. Dort also brings a career average of 11.2 points per game, but his value has always been measured more in stops than in scoring. He is expected to slot into the starting lineup alongside Trae Young and Dejounte Murray, giving Atlanta a defensive anchor on the wing.

Dort also spoke about the emotional side of the move, admitting that he had to process the news before he could get excited. He said he received a call from general manager Landry Fields, who outlined the vision for how Dort fits into the team's future. That conversation, Dort said, helped shift his mindset.

"Once I heard the plan, I was all in," he added. "They want me to be myself, to bring that toughness every night. I am not here to change who I am. I am here to help this team win."

The Hawks have struggled defensively for the past two seasons, ranking near the bottom of the league in defensive rating. Dort's arrival is a clear signal that the front office is prioritizing a culture change. He is also on an expiring contract, which adds an element of urgency for both sides to prove this partnership works.

Dort will not play in Thursday's game against the Celtics due to the trade being finalized, but he is expected to make his Hawks debut early next week. He said he has already spoken with several of his new teammates, including Young, who reached out to welcome him.

"I just want to get on the court and get to work," Dort said. "The talking is over. I am ready for this new chapter."
