Luke Pettitte, the son of Yankees legend Andy Pettitte, is officially starting his professional baseball career. The left-handed pitcher will begin his time in the organization with the Low-A Tampa team, as confirmed by MLB Pipeline and the team's transaction records.
The Yankees selected the younger Pettitte in the eighth round of the recent draft, taking him with the 248th overall pick. He comes to the club from Dallas Baptist University, a competitive Division I program in Texas. During his college career, he developed a reputation for solid command and a competitive edge on the mound, traits that certainly run in the family.
His father, Andy, enjoyed a storied 18-year career in the majors, mostly with the Yankees, where he won five World Series titles and became one of the most reliable postseason pitchers of his generation. Now, the next chapter begins for Luke as he reports to the Yankees' player development complex in Florida.
Starting in Tampa gives him the chance to adjust to professional hitters and the daily grind of a minor league schedule. It is a significant step, but one he has been preparing for his entire life. The organization will likely take a patient approach with him, focusing on his development and helping him build a foundation for the future. For now, the focus is on getting his feet wet and proving he belongs in the Yankees system.
