When Kodi Greene arrived at Washington as a highly touted offensive line recruit, the physical tools were never in question. The left tackle had the size, the footwork, and the raw power that made him a priority target for the Huskies' coaching staff. But as he prepares for his first real college season, Greene says the biggest battle has been internal. He has spent the offseason studying the approach of veteran teammate John Mills, and that study has turned into a full-blown mental makeover.
Greene admits that early on, he played with a passive, reactive style. He waited to see what the defense gave him, which worked in high school but will not fly in the Pac-12. Watching Mills, a player known for his aggressive, downhill mentality, Greene realized that elite linemen do not just block. They attack. They set the tone before the snap. They make the defender react to them.
So Greene has started to change his daily habits. He is focusing on quicker first steps, more violent hand placement, and a simple rule: finish every play like it is the last one. He says the shift is not just about technique, but about identity. He wants to be the guy that defensive ends dread facing in the fourth quarter.
The coaching staff has noticed. They see a more confident player who is no longer thinking, just executing. Greene knows the real test comes when the lights go on, but he feels ready. He is not trying to be John Mills. He is trying to take that same relentless mindset and make it his own. For a freshman tackle, that change in approach could be the difference between a learning year and a breakout one.
