Whitman receives lengthy contract extension and raise

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman has agreed to a significant contract extension that will keep him in Champaign through the 2035-36 academic year. The deal, approved by the university's board of trustees, also includes a substantial raise, reflecting the administration's confidence in his leadership.

Whitman, who took over the athletic department in 2016, has overseen a period of notable growth for Illinois sports. Under his watch, the football program made a bowl game appearance and the men's basketball team reached the NCAA Tournament, including a run to the Elite Eight. Facilities have also seen major upgrades, including the State Farm Center renovation and the construction of the new football training complex.

The extension locks in Whitman through 2036, a vote of stability for a department that has navigated the shifting landscape of college athletics, including the introduction of name, image, and likeness rules and conference realignment. His base salary will increase to $1.2 million annually, with additional performance-based incentives.

University officials praised Whitman for his strategic vision and fundraising efforts, which have helped modernize Illinois athletics. The new contract ensures continuity as the program continues to compete in the Big Ten Conference.
