Volpe Still Has Work to Do Before Claiming Yankees Job

October 19, 2026 - 04:35

Eleven starts at second base should not be enough to hand Anthony Volpe the Yankees' next everyday job. He deserves a real chance to compete for it, but the decision should come from a full evaluation rather than a small sample.

Volpe's brief run at the position has shown flashes, yet it has also exposed the gaps that come with limited experience. The Yankees face a roster decision that will shape their infield for years, and rushing to anoint a young player based on a handful of games risks repeating past mistakes. The organization has seen promising prospects struggle once pitchers adjust and the grind of a full season sets in.

The better path is an open competition. Volpe should get consistent reps, but so should the other internal options. Spring training and the early months of the season should determine who earns the role, not a short stint that flatters or punishes a player unfairly.

There is no question Volpe brings energy and defensive upside. The question is whether his bat and consistency will hold up once opposing teams have scouted him. The Yankees owe it to themselves and to Volpe to find out through a fair process, not a premature coronation.
