Steelers' Rico Dowdle: Splitting backfield with Warren

Steelers' Rico Dowdle: Splitting backfield with Warren

The Pittsburgh Steelers' running back room is taking shape, and Rico Dowdle is settling into a defined role alongside Jaylen Warren. Dowdle, who signed with the team this offseason, has been getting consistent work with the first-team offense during organized team activities. He is not being positioned as the clear-cut starter, but rather as a key piece in a committee approach that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has favored in the past.

Dowdle's skill set offers a different dynamic than what Warren brings. Warren is known for his explosive, physical style and his ability to break tackles in the open field. Dowdle, meanwhile, provides a more patient, one-cut running style that fits well with the zone-blocking scheme the Steelers are implementing. He is also a reliable pass protector, which should keep him on the field for third downs.

The Steelers are expected to use a rotation that keeps both backs fresh over the course of a long season. Dowdle is embracing the competition and the shared workload, noting that having two capable runners can wear down a defense. He has also been working on his receiving routes, hoping to become a dual-threat option out of the backfield. While the team has not named a starter, the early indications are that Dowdle and Warren will split snaps fairly evenly, with the hot hand potentially getting more touches in any given game. The coaching staff is pleased with the progress both players have shown so far.
