Steelers camp observations: Max Iheanachor remains out, but tackle depth shines on Day 10

Armchair general managers mapping out the 53-man roster should take note: Mike McCarthy is not against keeping 10 offensive linemen. If the early returns from training camp are any indication, the Steelers might need that extra spot just to house all the talent they have up front.

Day 10 of camp brought a familiar absence, as defensive lineman Max Iheanachor remained out with what the team is calling a minor issue. His continued absence is starting to raise a few eyebrows, but the bigger story on the practice field was the work being done by the offensive tackle group. With the first-team unit getting a lighter workload, the backups saw extended reps, and they made the most of it.

Second-year tackle Dan Moore Jr. looked sharp in one-on-one drills, anchoring well against the bull rush and showing better footwork on the edge. Rookie tackle Broderick Jones also had a solid afternoon, particularly in the run game, where he consistently sealed off his gap and drove defenders off the ball. The coaching staff has been rotating players liberally, and the depth is becoming a real asset.

The competition for the swing tackle spot is heating up, and the coaching staff seems to be enjoying the headache. One source close to the team said the front office is already discussing the possibility of carrying an extra lineman, given how many players are flashing potential. It is a good problem to have, but it means some tough cuts are coming down the line.

For now, the focus stays on getting Iheanachor back on the field and keeping the offensive line healthy. If the tackles keep playing like they did on Day 10, the Steelers might have a luxury they have not had in years.
