New lawsuits over NCAA eligibility are likely only the beginning

New lawsuits over NCAA eligibility are likely only the beginning

A federal judge in Ohio recently cleared the way for 24 athletes to regain eligibility, and now another lawsuit is taking direct aim at the NCAA's longstanding "five years to play five seasons" rule. The new case, filed in the same district, argues that the time limit unfairly punishes athletes who transfer or face academic setbacks, and it could force the association to scrap one of its core eligibility standards.

Legal experts say this is only the beginning. The NCAA has already lost major battles over name, image, and likeness compensation, and the current wave of litigation targets the very structure of amateurism. The "five-year clock" rule has been a fixture for decades, but judges are increasingly skeptical of restrictions that limit a student-athlete's ability to compete while other students face no such caps on their college careers.

If the plaintiffs succeed, the NCAA may have to allow athletes more flexibility to complete their seasons, especially those who have transferred multiple times or taken time off for injuries. The association has argued that the rule maintains competitive balance and academic standards, but critics say it is an outdated control mechanism.

With more lawsuits already being prepared in other states, the NCAA is facing a legal siege that could fundamentally reshape how eligibility is determined. For now, the Ohio case is the one to watch, but it is unlikely to be the last.
