New Australian Open Head Suggests Shortening Grand Slam Matches

Andrew Abdo, who stepped into the role of Australian Open tournament director last month, has sparked debate by suggesting that Grand Slam matches could be shortened. Abdo, who replaced Craig Tilley, raised the idea during a recent interview, noting that the current best-of-five-set format for men's singles might not fit modern viewing habits.

He pointed to the length of matches, which can stretch past four or even five hours, as a potential barrier for younger audiences and broadcast partners. Abdo did not propose a specific new format, but he mentioned that tennis needs to explore options like reducing sets or introducing tiebreaks earlier in the fifth set. He stressed that any change would require agreement from the ATP, WTA, and the other three Grand Slam tournaments.

The reaction from players has been mixed. Some veterans argue that the five-set format is a core part of tennis history and should stay untouched. Others, especially those who play deep into the second week, have said they would welcome a shorter path to the final. Abdo acknowledged the tradition but said the sport has to evolve to stay relevant.

No formal proposal has been made yet. Abdo said he wants to start a conversation with players and fans before any rule change is considered. The next Australian Open is scheduled for January, and any decision would likely come well after that event.
