A retired furniture industry executive and his wife, already known for their long-standing support of Western Carolina University, have made a $100,000 gift to the school's athletic programs. The donation was driven by fond memories of attending the university during the golden era of Catamount sports.
The couple, who have requested to remain anonymous, said the decision to give back was rooted in the excitement and community spirit they experienced on campus during the 1970s and 1980s. Those years saw the Catamounts achieve notable success in football and basketball, drawing large crowds and creating a lasting bond between the university and its fans.
"We wanted to help ensure that current and future students can feel that same pride and energy," the donors stated. "Athletics were a huge part of our college experience, and we hope this gift helps build a foundation for more championship memories."
WCU athletic officials said the funds will be used to support facility upgrades and scholarship endowments. The donation adds to a growing trend of alumni stepping up to bolster the university's sports programs, which have seen renewed competitiveness in recent years. The gift was announced during a special ceremony at the Ramsey Center, where the couple was recognized for their continued generosity.
