Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions won't like this. A recent ranking of NFL offensive lines has placed the Lions in a spot that seems far too low for a unit that has been one of the league's best in recent memory.
Detroit has invested heavily in the trenches. Penei Sewell is widely considered one of the top tackles in football. Frank Ragnow has been a Pro Bowl caliber center when healthy. Taylor Decker has held down the left side for years. Together, they have formed a group that consistently opens running lanes and protects the quarterback.
That is why the low placement in this ranking is confusing. The Lions have built their identity around physical play up front. Campbell has said many times that the team goes as the offensive line goes. When that group plays well, Detroit wins. When it struggles, the entire offense sputters.
Analysts often point to injuries as a reason for a dip in production. Ragnow has dealt with nagging issues. Other starters have missed time. Still, the drop in this particular ranking feels harsh given the talent on the roster and the results on the field.
For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, respect in the trenches matters. The Lions will have plenty of chances to prove the ranking wrong once the season begins.
