Keeping your kids in the game: Preventing sports injuries

Youth sports are a great way for kids to stay active, learn teamwork, and build confidence. But with increased activity comes the risk of injury. While some injuries are unavoidable, many can be prevented with the right approach. Parents and coaches should emphasize proper warm-ups, stretching, and using the correct gear for each sport. It is also important to encourage kids to speak up when something hurts, rather than playing through the pain.

When a minor injury does happen at home, parents can turn to a simple, effective method known as RICE therapy. This stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Resting the injured area prevents further damage. Applying ice helps reduce swelling and numbs the pain. Using a compression bandage can limit swelling, and elevating the injury above the heart helps drain fluid away.

However, not every injury can be handled at home. If pain, swelling, or limited movement lasts for more than a few days, it may be time to see a doctor. Consumer Reports advises that persistent symptoms could signal a more serious problem, like a fracture or a torn ligament. Ignoring these signs can lead to long-term issues or a longer recovery. The goal is to keep kids in the game safely, not to rush them back before they are ready. A cautious approach now can mean a healthier, more active future for your young athlete.
