The Cleveland Guardians dropped a close game to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, but the box score did not tell the whole story. For the first time in over a week, third baseman Jose Ramirez was back in the lineup, and he wasted no time reminding everyone why he is the heart of the team.
Ramirez, who had been sidelined with a nagging hamstring issue, looked sharp from his first at-bat. He launched a solo home run in the fourth inning that cut the Twins' lead in half and sent a jolt through the dugout. Later, he added a hard-hit single and made a slick defensive play at the hot corner, sliding to his right to snag a sharp grounder and firing to first for the out.
The Guardians ultimately lost 5-3, unable to mount a full comeback against Minnesota's bullpen. But for a team that has struggled to generate offense without their star, seeing Ramirez move freely and swing with authority was a positive sign. Manager Stephen Vogt noted after the game that Ramirez looked comfortable and that the plan is to ease him back into everyday action.
While the loss stings, the return of their franchise player gives Cleveland a real boost as they push through a tough stretch in the schedule. If Ramirez stays healthy, the Guardians have a much better shot at turning these close losses into wins.
