Jared Goff spent most of Thursday night watching his team chase a game that had already slipped away. The Detroit Lions fell behind early against the Buffalo Bills, and the deficit only grew as the evening wore on. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, the outcome was no longer in doubt.
That did not stop Goff from piling up numbers.
He finished the night with 327 passing yards and four touchdown passes, a stat line that looks impressive until you remember the context. Most of that production came after the game had been decided, with Buffalo easing off the gas and Detroit simply trying to salvage something from a lopsided loss.
Goff found open receivers underneath soft coverage. He connected on short routes that turned into scores when defenders gave ground rather than risk anything meaningful. The touchdowns counted, the yards counted, and the box score will show a quarterback who played well.
The film will show something different.
This has become a familiar pattern for Goff and the Lions in games where they fall behind big. The offense moves the ball once the pressure is gone. Drives that stall early suddenly find rhythm late. The final score narrows just enough to suggest a closer contest than what actually unfolded.
Detroit still lost. The defense could not slow down Buffalo when it mattered. The running game never got going. And Goff, for all his late production, spent too much of the night throwing to catch up rather than to build a lead.
The numbers will be cited in his defense. The result will say otherwise.
